Making Connections in Mérida

Uxmal

We have been in Mérida for about 10 days, and have visited a couple of Maya archeological sites and have talked to a few Mayan educators. While Uxmal and Kabah are very interesting sites, we found hardly any glyphs. Restorations are in process at Kabah, and a team of international archeologists are working at Uxmal. Perhaps there will be more to see in future visits.

We’ve also spent time with teachers at a municipal Maya school. They have been very helpful; one teacher is translating some glyphs into Yucatec Mayan and will let us record her.

We met with a teacher and administrator at PICY (Programas de Inmersión Cultural en Yucatán) to discuss their Mayan classes. They were enthusiastic about the Ancient Maya App, and will try to help us connect with a professor here whose area of expertise is Maya culture and language. We may be able to take a mini-course with him next week.
